Market Observations

Use the back office to manage your asset values and market observations.

A Market Observation is a mark-to-market value for a given asset. Market observations are added to underlying holdings of an asset/

There are four ways Market Observations maybe added:

  • Manually
  • As a result of transactions
  • Via a Spreadsheet import
  • From a data feed

Manually Adding Market Observations

Manual Market Observations can be used, whenever deemed fit, to update a Market Value of an asset from its original price or to update a previous Market Observation.

To add a Manual Market Observation in the Back Office, navigate to the respective holding, click on the Market Observations tab, and then select the '+Add Market Observation' option located in the top right-hand corner.

Adding Market Observations via Transactions

market obsvs transaction

When you create a transaction, you can choose whether or not you'd like a corresponding market observation to be created. The default behaviour for most asset classes and transaction types is "yes." The transaction type will determine the behaviour of the market observation. For example, a Buy will increase the value of the asset by the Buy amount, whereas a Distribution will not increase the value of the asset.

Adding Market Observations via Spreadsheet Import

spreadsheet marktMarket Observations can also be added via Spreadsheet Importing. Simply create a transactions spreadsheet import and specify that your transaction type is a market_observation.

Note: A market_observation transaction type is not a true "transaction" and does not create a corresponding transaction, but rather is used for mark to market values in the market observations tab.

Adding Market Observations via a Data Feed

This process is generally automated depending on the feed. Copia uses Morningstar ByAllAccounts for many institutional connections and will get buys, sells, and other transactional data resulting in market observation generation. We also use third party data providers to acquire daily observations on assets such as Domestic Equity.

In the case of direct connections to institutions, there are a variety of formats and methods to build an assets observation history.
